Weak Puppy Chained Among Junk, Covered in Flies

Date Published

[HK Animal Post] A 6-month-old mongrel was found extremely emaciated and weak, chained among piles of junk. The dog lay lifeless, covered in swarms of flies. Today, volunteers from Unchain Dog HK visited the site to follow up. The owner claimed the dog had previously been adopted by another villager but became sick and thin, so he took the dog back on April 6. He said he had given the dog probiotics and antibiotics and believed the condition was improving.

However, the volunteers saw that the dog was in critical condition — unable to take even a few steps without collapsing. After persuading the owner to surrender the dog, they immediately brought it to a veterinary clinic for examination and treatment.

The case was first reported by villagers near Mong Tseng Wai, Tin Shui Wai, who reached out to theUnchain Dog HK for help. They had found a chained dog in very poor condition, barely responsive, and covered in flies in an unsanitary environment.

When volunteers arrived today, they waited about an hour at the scene until the estimated 70-year-old dog owner returned from walking the dog. They then learned more about the situation.

The dog, only six months old, was given away by the owner to another villager about two months ago. However, after hearing that the adopter had mistreated the dog, causing it to become extremely thin and weak, the owner took it back on April 6. Unfortunately, the dog was no longer eating kibble and recently refused even canned food.

The owner explained he keeps six dogs and walks them daily, including this weak puppy. He said the dog was chained because there's a large fish pond nearby, and he worried the dog might fall in. Asked why the dog hadn't seen a vet, he said he had been giving it probiotics and antibiotics, and believed its condition was improving. He had considered taking it to the vet in a few days.

But volunteers saw otherwise — the dog was severely malnourished, its ribs clearly visible, too weak to walk, and had no vocal response at all.

Eventually, the volunteer persuaded the owner to surrender the dog. She took it to Mou Sau Veterinary Centre for urgent care and is awaiting the results of medical tests. They renamed the dog "Sing Sing" (星星), hoping it will recover soon.
